THE DARK GREEN SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Dark Green School Program (DGSP) is a project launched in 2008 by the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines (EENP), now the Philippine Network of Educators on Environment (PNEE), as an assessment system that categorizes a Member- Institution into a Dark Green School, a Medium Green School or a Light Green School. A Dark Green School category is the highest recognition bestowed to PNEE Member- Institutions in acknowledgment of their exemplary achievements and leadership in environmental education. Ultimately, all PNEE Member-Institutions should be categorized as Dark Green Schools.
DGSP’s guiding philosophy is that schools should be imbued with an embedded educational value that is protective and nurturing of the environment. As pillars of higher education and learning, PNEE Member-Institutions should be the training grounds for future environmental leaders that will uphold the tenets of sustainable development with an emphasis on environmental education. DGSP can enable PNEE Member-Institutions to go beyond compliance with environmental laws and regulations and at the same time strengthen environmental education by institutionalizing environmental science and management principles in their mandated functions.
